The Sabi Sands is the most sought-after private game reserve in Africa. It shares an unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park, and is known for relaxed, habituated wildlife, leopards above all, and a roll-call of lodges that includes Londolozi, Singita and Sabi Sabi.
The question we field most often is simple: when should you go? Honestly, there is no bad time. But the experience shifts through the year, and knowing how helps you pick the right season for the safari you want.
Dry Season: May to September
The dry winter months are widely held to be the best for game viewing. As the bush thins and seasonal water dries up, animals concentrate around rivers and the remaining waterholes. Sparse vegetation makes them far easier to spot from the vehicle. Days are mild, usually 22 to 26 degrees, but mornings and evenings turn cold, sometimes close to freezing. Pack layers.
June through August is peak season. Leopard sightings are at their best, with open bush giving guides clean sight lines. Elephant and buffalo herds move through, and predator activity along the Sand and Sabie rivers is strong. This is also the busiest stretch for international visitors, so lodges fill months ahead.
Green Season: October to April
The summer months bring warmth, afternoon thunderstorms and a flush of green. Dense vegetation makes game slightly harder to spot, but the season has its own appeal. Impala lambing peaks around November and pulls predators in close. It is also prime birding, as migratory species arrive from Europe and North Africa.
For photographers, green season is the one to catch. Storm light is dramatic and the lush backdrop lifts wildlife images. Many of the best-known photographs from the Sabi Sands were made in these months. If a camera is central to your trip, see our safari photography tips.
October and November can swing either way: hot days, scattered storms, and animals adjusting to the change. December to February is full summer with reliable afternoon rain, while March and April see the bush dry out again as autumn sets in.
Our Recommendation
For a first visit, we usually point people to May through August. Game viewing is consistently strong and the cool, dry weather makes for comfortable drives. Keen photographers and birders should not write off the green season, though: October through March is a different trip, and just as rewarding.
If budget matters, green-season rates at most Sabi Sands lodges sit well below peak, and you will often have more of the reserve to yourself.
Whenever you come, the Sabi Sands rarely disappoints. It is one of the headline reserves on our Southern Africa safaris, and you can compare it season by season on our safari calendar. Get in touch and we will help you settle on the right dates.
