The Sabi Sands is arguably the most sought-after private game reserve in Africa. Sharing an unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park, it is renowned for its relaxed, habituated wildlife — particularly leopards — and its collection of world-class lodges including Londolozi, Singita and Sabi Sabi.
But one of the most common questions we get asked is: when is the best time to go? The honest answer is that there is no bad time to visit the Sabi Sands. However, the experience shifts significantly through the year, and understanding those shifts will help you choose the right season for what you want out of your safari.
Dry Season: May to September
The dry winter months are widely considered the best time for game viewing. As the bush thins out and water sources dry up, animals congregate around rivers and remaining waterholes. Vegetation drops away, making it far easier to spot wildlife from the vehicle. Temperatures are mild during the day — typically around 22 to 26 degrees Celsius — but mornings and evenings can be bitterly cold, sometimes dropping to near freezing. Layers are essential.
June through August is peak season. Leopard sightings are at their best as the open bush gives guides clear sight lines. Large herds of elephant and buffalo move through the area, and predator activity around the Sand River and Sabie River is excellent. This is also the most popular period with international visitors, so lodges book out well in advance.
Green Season: October to April
The summer months bring warm temperatures, afternoon thunderstorms and an explosion of green. While the dense vegetation can make spotting game slightly harder, the green season has its own magic. This is when most of the impala lambing takes place — typically November — drawing in predators. It is also the peak birding season, with migratory species arriving from Europe and North Africa.
For photographers, the green season is extraordinary. The dramatic storm clouds create incredible light, and the lush landscape provides a stunning backdrop for wildlife images. Many of the most iconic photographs from the Sabi Sands were taken during this period.
October and November can be unpredictable — hot days, scattered storms, and animals adjusting to the changing season. December through February is full summer with reliable afternoon rain, while March and April see the bush start to dry out again as autumn arrives.
Our Recommendation
For a first-time visitor, we usually recommend May through August. The game viewing is consistently excellent and the cooler, drier weather makes for comfortable drives. But if you are a keen photographer or birder, do not overlook the green season — October through March offers a completely different and equally rewarding experience.
If budget is a consideration, green season rates at most Sabi Sands lodges are significantly lower than peak season, and you will often have the reserve more to yourself.
Whatever time of year you choose, the Sabi Sands rarely disappoints. Get in touch and we will help you pick the perfect dates for your trip.
