When most people think of a South African safari, they picture the dense bushveld of the Kruger region. Tswalu Kalahari is the complete opposite — and that is exactly what makes it one of the most extraordinary safari destinations in Africa.
A Different Kind of Wilderness
Tswalu sits in the Green Kalahari at the foot of the Korannaberg mountains. It is the largest private game reserve in South Africa — over 114,000 hectares of rolling red dunes, golden grasslands and dramatic mountain scenery. There are no fences, no crowds and no more than 30 guests at any time. The open landscape means visibility is extraordinary — you can see for kilometres.
The Wildlife You Will Not See Anywhere Else
Tswalu’s real stars are species you cannot easily find elsewhere. It is one of the best places in the world to see pangolin — with a dedicated research and tracking programme that gives guests the chance to follow these elusive creatures on foot at night. Aardvark, brown hyaena, bat-eared fox, black-maned Kalahari lion, cheetah and the endemic Kalahari springbok are all regularly seen.
Conservation at Its Core
Owned by the Oppenheimer family, Tswalu exists for the conservation and restoration of the southern Kalahari. The Tswalu Foundation funds extensive research on pangolin, aardvark, desert black rhino and brown hyaena. Guests are invited to join researchers in the field — a genuine experience that connects you directly to the work being done.
The Experience
Every group receives a private vehicle with a dedicated guide and tracker. There are no shared drives, no set schedules and no rush. If you want to spend three hours following a pangolin, you can. Horseback safaris, walking safaris, mountain biking and star beds on the dunes are all available. The accommodation is warm, earthy and beautifully designed, and the food is outstanding.
Who Is It For?
Tswalu is perfect for repeat safari-goers seeking something genuinely different, families who want private flexibility, photographers seeking unique subjects, and anyone with a passion for conservation. It is also one of the most romantic properties in Africa.
