The park is small and the landscape stark, a dry lakebed punctuated by green swamps fed by snowmelt filtering down from Kilimanjaro. Those swamps are the key: they hold water year-round, drawing elephants and plains game out of the surrounding scrub and concentrating wildlife in a way that makes Amboseli reliable and very photogenic.
Amboseli's elephants are among the best studied on earth, the subject of a research project running since 1972, and the park is known for its great tuskers, old bulls carrying enormous ivory of a kind that has become rare elsewhere. Maasai community land surrounds the park, and several lodges sit on conservancies that add walking and night drives.
It is compact enough to enjoy in a couple of nights and pairs naturally with the Masai Mara or with a Tanzania crossing, given how close it sits to the border.
Elephants are the stars, in large, relaxed family herds, including some of Africa's most impressive tuskers. The open ground gives wonderful viewing as they move between the swamps and the plains.
Lion, cheetah and spotted hyaena hunt the plains, and the swamps and grasslands hold buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and good numbers of plains game. The short grass and open terrain make predators easier to spot than in thicker bush.
Birdlife is excellent, with over 400 species recorded around the wetlands, from pelicans and herons to raptors, and flamingos when water levels are right. The combination of swamp and dry plain packs a lot of variety into a small area.
The dry seasons, June to October and January to February, are best, with concentrated game and the clearest, most reliable views of Kilimanjaro before the cloud builds each day.
The rains of March to May and November bring green landscapes, fewer visitors and lower rates, but the mountain is more often hidden and game more dispersed. For the classic Kilimanjaro shot, come in the dry season.
