A safari honeymoon is one of the most romantic ways to start married life. Skip the crowded beach resort. Picture instead a private suite overlooking the bush, sundowners as elephants drift past the deck, and dinner under a sky thick with stars. South Africa offers some of the finest honeymoon safaris anywhere.
Why South Africa for a Honeymoon?
South Africa pairs a serious safari with award-winning wine regions, two coastlines, walkable cities and some of the best food on the continent. A typical honeymoon might combine three or four nights in the Sabi Sands with a few days in the Cape Winelands and a night or two in Cape Town. Few destinations give you that much variety in one trip.
Access is the other advantage. South Africa has direct long-haul flights, a reliable network of light-aircraft transfers, and an exchange rate that puts luxury lodges within closer reach than most couples expect.
Choosing the Right Lodge
For a honeymoon, privacy matters more than anything. Look for suites with private plunge pools, outdoor showers, a dedicated butler and the option of private dining. Our favourites include Londolozi’s Granite Suites for seclusion, Singita for design and service, and Lion Sands’ Treehouses, open-air platforms where you sleep out under the stars. For complete privacy, Tswalu Kalahari caps its guest list at 30 across the largest private reserve in the country.
How Long Should You Stay?
For the safari itself, three to four nights is right. Add another three or four if you are combining it with Cape Town or the Winelands. Seven to ten days in total suits most honeymoon couples.
What to Expect
Most luxury lodges are fully inclusive: meals, drinks, two game drives a day and often a spa. Romantic extras such as a private bush dinner, a couples’ massage or a vehicle to yourselves can usually be arranged directly with the lodge.
Budget Considerations
Luxury lodges generally run from R15,000 to R50,000 per person per night, fully inclusive. Green season, roughly October through March, brings lower rates and fewer vehicles, which suits couples who want the reserve to feel like their own.
