Timbavati Safari

Wilder and quieter than its famous neighbour, and the home of the white lions.

Overview

About Timbavati

The Timbavati Private Nature Reserve lies on the western edge of the Kruger, just north of the Sabi Sands, and shares the same unfenced boundary with the national park. The wildlife is the same, but the feel is different: fewer lodges, more space and a rawer, more old-school bush atmosphere.

Timbavati is best known to the world for its white lions, a rare colour variant born here and woven into local legend. They are not a separate species but a recessive trait, and while sightings are never guaranteed, the reserve remains the place the white lions are most associated with.

Because it is less developed than the Sabi Sands, Timbavati suits travellers who want the off-road Big Five experience with a wilder edge and, often, a lower price. Several camps place a strong emphasis on walking safaris, which makes it a good choice for a second or third safari.

The reserve is also a serious conservation player, ploughing traversing fees back into anti-poaching and habitat management across the Greater Kruger system, which keeps this vast, shared ecosystem intact.

Wildlife

Wildlife in Timbavati

Lion are the headline, with well-established prides and the famous white lineage. Leopard are present and viewable, if at slightly lower density than the Sabi Sands, and elephant, buffalo and rhino complete the Big Five.

Cheetah do well on the more open western reaches, and African wild dog move through regularly. The general game and predator interactions are excellent, and the lower vehicle numbers mean you often have a sighting to yourself.

Birding is strong year-round and excellent in summer, and Timbavati night drives turn up the nocturnal species, from genets and civets to the occasional honey badger or porcupine.

When to Go

Best Time to Visit Timbavati

As across the Greater Kruger, May to September is the prime dry-season window, with thin bush, concentrated game and cold, active mornings. July to September is the peak.

The green summer brings heat, storms and lush bush that makes viewing harder but rewards birders and photographers, with lower rates and far fewer vehicles than peak season.

Timbavati FAQs

Will I see the white lions?

They are rare and never guaranteed, as the white colouring is a recessive trait that appears irregularly. Timbavati is the reserve most associated with them, so it offers the best chance.

Is Timbavati cheaper than the Sabi Sands?

Generally yes, for a comparable off-road Big Five experience. It has fewer ultra-luxury lodges and more mid-range and walking-focused camps.

Is Timbavati good for walking safaris?

Yes, it is one of the better Greater Kruger reserves for walking, with several camps built around guided bush walks and dedicated walking trails.

Is Timbavati malaria-free?

No, it is a low-risk malaria area like the rest of the Greater Kruger, with most risk in summer.

How do I get to Timbavati?

Fly from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit (Eastgate) by light aircraft or scheduled flight, then transfer by road to your camp.

Timbavati or the Sabi Sands for a first safari?

The Sabi Sands for the most reliable leopard and the widest choice of lodges; Timbavati for a wilder, quieter feel and better value, often as a second safari.
